THE BETRAYAL AT HOME

I married my best friend from childhood, but just before our fifth wedding anniversary, I overheard some words that completely changed my life: “She fell directly into my trap. My plan is finally about to work.”

Matthew and I had always seemed destined to be together. Our families lived next to each other. We went to the same preschool, grew up in the same neighborhood, and later attended the same school. We were practically inseparable.

Every time someone made fun of me, Matthew defended me. When exams came around, we studied together. And when the graduation dance came, he was the one who asked me to go with him. Everyone joked that one day we would end up getting married. We always laughed when we heard those comments.

But during high school, our friendship began to turn into love. After graduating from university, Matthew knelt in front of me and asked: “Do you want to marry me?” I answered before he could finish the question. “Yes.” At that moment, I truly believed I was the luckiest woman in the world.

Our relationship seemed perfect. We got married, bought a house in the same neighborhood where we grew up, and built the quiet life we had always dreamed of. As our fifth anniversary approached, I decided Matthew deserved an unforgettable gift.

Months earlier, I had seen him admire an expensive watch at a store on the other side of town. Secretly, I saved up enough money and bought it for him. The day it was ready, I told Matthew I was going to work, but in reality, I had taken the day off.

After picking up the watch, I drove back home with the gift by my side, unable to stop imagining his reaction. I thought Matthew would still be at work. But when I arrived at the front door, I saw his car was already there.

Confused, I silently opened the front door. Then I heard his voice from the living room; he was talking to someone on the phone. As soon as I heard his name, I froze. At first, I thought he was organizing a surprise for our anniversary.

I hid behind the door, trying not to make any noise. Then Matthew laughed and said: “Don’t worry. She fell directly into MY TRAP since we were in high school.” I felt my whole body freezing. My heart began to beat so hard that I could barely breathe. What trap? And why had it started when we were teenagers?

Before I could process his words, Matthew continued: “My plan is about to work. I’ve been preparing for this since we were teenagers.” The gift bag almost fell from my hands. Suddenly, all the memories we had shared seemed different: our childhood friendship, the times he defended me, the night of the graduation dance, his marriage proposal, our wedding. Had any of those moments been real?

Then Matthew said something else—something so impactful that I ran out of the house before I could discover that I had been listening to him. Tears clouded my vision as I ran toward my car. I had entered that house believing I was going to surprise the man I loved, but I left there wondering if my entire marriage had been built around a secret plan. I felt as if I had suddenly woken up from a nightmare.
