Shadows of a Hidden Truth

The café became suffocatingly quiet as the medical assistant leaned forward, extending an official document from the clinic across the polished mahogany table. Yet, as Diego opened his mouth to stammer an apology, the medical assistant interrupted him once again, pointing directly toward the final page of the file.

The assistant explained that the anomaly went beyond a simple failed procedure, urging them both to attend the scheduled ultrasound appointment that afternoon for a comprehensive medical evaluation. Diego reached across the table to touch Laura’s hand, but she pulled away instantly, her eyes cold and distant. She gathered her purse, stood up from the wooden chair, and walked out of the café without casting a single backward glance at the man who had discarded her so easily ….
