The Manila folder felt heavy in Gabriel’s calloused hands as the dawn light filtered through the master bedroom blinds. He sat on the edge of the bed—a bed he shared with Candice, the woman he had married two years after Clara’s death, believing she would bring warmth back into his son’s life.
Instead, he was looking at an organized ledger of calculated ruin.
Inside the folder labeled “WIDOWS” were financial statements, forged power-of-attorney documents, and life insurance policies dating back four years. Candice hadn’t just target Gabriel. There were three other men listed in the ledger—all widower truck drivers or long-haul contractors who spent weeks on the road, leaving vulnerable, grieving children behind.
Gabriel’s eyes locked onto a life insurance policy taken out on his own son six months ago. The primary beneficiary wasn’t Gabriel. It was Candice, supported by a forged signature claiming Gabriel had relinquished guardianship rights due to “chronic occupational absence.”
Below the policies lay a stack of medical records. They weren’t Lucas’s. They belonged to Clara. Gabriel’s breath hitched as he scanned the dates. Candice had worked as an administrative assistant at the hospice facility where Clara spent her final months. She hadn’t met Gabriel by chance at a diner a year after Clara died—she had selected him from a database of grieving husbands with paid-off mortgages and life insurance payouts.
A quiet creak sounded from the doorway. Lucas was standing there, his pale face illuminated by the morning light, his arms wrapped tightly around his ribs.
“Dad?” Lucas whispered. “Are you going to confront her when she gets back on Sunday?”
Gabriel closed the Manila folder, his expression dropping into a cold, terrifying calm. “No, son,” he said, pulling his phone from his pocket and snapping high-resolution photos of every single receipt, forged signature, and policy. “Confronting a thief gives them time to run. We’re going to let her enjoy Miami.”
