Part 4: The Handcuffs and the Deed
My father quickly tried to recover his composure, stepping forward with his hands in his pockets, putting on his usual authoritative parental posture. “Clara, stop being dramatic. We are your parents. We came here to help you manage your assets. Chloe is in a difficult situation, and this apartment is far too big for one person—”
“I don’t care about Chloe’s situation, Dad,” I interrupted, taking a slow sip of my coffee. “And you aren’t managing anything.”
Before my father could yell, three heavy knocks rattled the doorframe. Detective Miller and three uniformed Boston police officers stepped into the foyer, their eyes taking in the drilled lock, the contractor bags, and the forged documents sitting on the dining table.
“Mr. Richard Vance?” Detective Miller asked, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. “You and your wife are under arrest for felony breaking and entering, grand larceny conspiracy, and uttering a forged document.”
“This is a family matter!” my mother shrieked as an officer grabbed her arms, pulling her hands behind her back. “She’s my daughter! This is my father’s property!”
“It was Arthur Vance’s property, ma’am,” Detective Miller replied cleanly, clicking the steel cuffs around her wrists. “Until he transferred the deed exclusively to Clara five years ago. You have no legal rights to this building, this furniture, or these keys.”
Chloe burst into hysterical tears, backing away toward the windows as the officers stepped toward her. “Clara! Tell them to stop! You’re ruining our family! It was just a house!”
I walked over to the dining table, picked up the forged power of attorney, and looked my sister directly in her wet, terrified eyes. “It wasn’t just a house, Chloe. It was the only place where someone loved me without asking for a price.”
