Part 4: The Midnight Collapse
By 11:00 PM, the grand reception had descended into total chaos.
Ivan stood near the center stage of the ballroom, holding a glass of vintage champagne, waiting for Harrison to sign the buyout documents in front of the press. But instead of taking the stage, Harrison walked straight out the double doors, followed by his entire investment team, leaving behind a cold, unsigned contract on the velvet table.
Before Ivan could run after them, his phone began buzzing relentlessly in his tuxedo pocket.
The first alert was an automated notification from his bank: Notice of Credit Revocation. Business account frozen due to lack of primary guarantor.
The second was a formal legal email from Arthur Vance’s firm: Eviction and Mortgage Transfer Notice regarding Unit 402, Grand Avenue.
Brenda stood beside him, her sharp smile instantly vanishing as she watched her fiancé’s face turn the color of ash. “Ivan? What’s happening? Why did the venture team leave? Why are the caterers saying our secondary payment card was declined?!”
“My… my credit line,” Ivan stammered, his hands shaking so violently he dropped his champagne glass, shattering it against the polished floorboards. “It’s gone. The condo… the buyout… everything was backed by my mother.”
Brenda stared at him in utter horror. “What do you mean, backed by your mother? You told me you built that company from scratch! You told me she was just a poor, broke old woman who lived on a pension!”
“She… she never spent her money,” Ivan choked out, tears of sudden, agonizing realization spilling down his face. “She lived simply so she could fund my entire life in secret…”..
