The Exchange
Crawling forward on his knees, Bob approached the giant primate. The contrast between his pale, trembling human hand and Barnaby’s massive, charcoal-colored fingers was stark. Bob reached out, his fingers brushing against the coarse fur of the young gorilla’s palm as he lifted the ring.
“Thank you,” Bob whispered, looking Barnaby dead in the eyes.
Barnaby responded by rolling his eyes dramatically and turning his back on the photographer.
Paka watched the entire exchange with the stoic dignity of an ancient king. Once the ring was safely back in human hands, the alpha let out a softer, huffing sound—almost like a sigh of relief that the diplomatic incident had been averted. He turned heavily, nudging Barnaby forward with his massive shoulder to guide him back into the deep safety of the brush. 🌿
But Barnaby wasn’t quite finished with his performance.
Just before disappearing into the thick green wall of leaves, the young gorilla turned his head around, caught Bob looking through his lens again, and flashed that same, hilarious single-finger salute one last time.
“I got it!” Bob yelled, completely forgetting to be quiet as he snapped the shutter. “I got the shot!”…..
