Part 2: The Silent Response

Part 3: The Warden’s Announcement

The entire yard gasped in disbelief. The fearsome Captain Vance—a man who had ruled the facility with an iron fist for fifteen years—had just been addressed by his first name by a seventy-four-year-old laundry inmate.

The Warden stepped forward, his face pale as chalk, and looked directly at Vanessa.

“Vanessa Miller,” the Warden announced, his voice carrying clearly across the silent crowd. “You have just laid hands on Margaret Sterling.”

A ripple of sudden, icy panic passed through the senior inmates near the back of the yard. The name Sterling was legendary in legal and political circles.

“Who cares what her name is?!” Vanessa barked, though a seed of doubt was beginning to take root in her chest. “She’s just a weak old convict who couldn’t finish her bid!”

“Margaret Sterling isn’t a convict,” Captain Vance said, standing up and towering over Vanessa, his eyes burning with intense fury. “She is the founder of the Federal Prison Oversight Committee, the former Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court, and the woman who personally funded the educational and rehabilitation programs in this entire district.”

The Warden pulled a blue folder from under his arm. “Judge Sterling entered this facility under a covert thirty-day observational tenure to inspect inmate conditions, staff integrity, and abuse levels firsthand. Her term ended at midnight last night.”

To see Vanessa face the immediate consequences of her actions, continue reading below for Part 4.
