The Counter-Hunt 🌿
I had seconds to act. I couldn’t keep the collar here, or they would blast the door down. I looked around the basement and spotted a small, rusted ventilation shaft that led out to the eastern drainage ditch outside.
I scrambled over to the shaft, shoved the blinking collar as far down the pipe as my arm could reach, and pushed it with a broken broom handle until I heard it slide down into the outer mud.
“They’ll think you broke out into the forest,” I whispered, rushing back to Tambe’s side.
Just as I reached him, the heavy wooden door at the top of the stairs was kicked open with a resounding boom. 💥
“Check down there! Use the flashlights!” 🔦
The bright, piercing beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness of the stairwell, sweeping across the concrete floor just a few yards from where we stood. I pulled myself behind a heavy metal storage cabinet, drawing Tambe with me. He squeezed his massive frame into the tight space, pressing his back against the wall and pulling me tightly against his chest, shielding my body with his own.
I could hear the poacher descending the steps, his heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the concrete.
Step.
Step.
Step.
The flashlight beam danced across the metal cabinet. If the man walked just two more paces forward, he would round the corner and see us. My breath hitched in my throat. I closed my eyes, waiting for the inevitable confrontation.
Beside me, I felt a subtle shift in Tambe’s demeanor. The fear that had gripped him during the thunderstorm was completely gone. In its place was something ancient, fiercely protective, and incredibly dangerous. His chest expanded, and a low, almost imperceptible growl began to vibrate deep within his throat.
Suddenly, a loud shout echoed from the outdoor courtyard.
“Boss! Over here! I found the tracker signal in the mud by the drainage ditch! The beast escaped into the treeline!” 🌳
The poacher on the stairs froze. He swung his flashlight back toward the door.
“Are you sure?” he yelled back.
“Yeah! The signal is moving down the ridge! Hurry up before the rain washes out the tracks!”
The man on the stairs swore loudly, turned around, and bolted back up the steps, his footsteps fading rapidly as he ran out out into the storm.
A Bond Unbroken 🤝
I let out a long, shuddering breath, my forehead leaning against Tambe’s massive, warm shoulder. We stayed in the darkness for what felt like hours, listening to the distant sounds of the sanctuary security team finally arriving to chase the intruders away.
By the time Marcus found us, the sun was just beginning to peek through the storm clouds, casting long, golden beams of light through the cracked basement window. 🌅
“Sarah! Tambe!” Marcus called out, his voice filled with exhaustion and relief. “The police are here. The poachers are gone. They didn’t get any of them.”
As we walked out into the fresh, rain-washed morning air, Tambe stopped at the threshold of his enclosure. He turned around, looked at me one last time, and placed his massive, leathery palm gently against my cheek, mimicking the exact gesture I had used to calm him during the worst of the storm.
It was a silent, profound thank you from a creature that possessed no words, but shared a bond deeper than language itself.
