Part 2: The Race to the Basement

Part 3: The Secret Ledgers

My hand trembled violently as I inserted the key into the oxidized lock. It turned with a heavy, satisfying metallic click that echoed through the dark cellar.

I pulled open the thick iron door. Inside the vault lay three thick, leather-bound accounting ledgers, a dozen digital thumb drives, and a set of certified property deeds bearing the official seal of the Federal Tax Administration.

I pulled out the top ledger, opening it to the first page. My breath caught in my throat.

For thirty years, Esteban’s transportation business had been built on a lie. My grandfather had originally provided the foundational capital for the company, holding sixty percent of the primary voting shares under a private family trust. But more importantly, these ledgers detailed fifteen years of systematic tax evasion, fraudulent shell companies, and illegal asset transfers orchestrated by Esteban and Lorena’s private logistics firm.

Esteban hadn’t just sold my mother’s house to line his pockets; he had staged the quick sale to convert stolen corporate assets into untraceable offshore cash before a federal tax audit hit his company next week. He thought my mother’s house was just an old piece of real estate, completely unaware that it housed the complete forensic paper trail of his entire criminal career.

Suddenly, heavy footsteps thundered down the cellar stairs.

“I told you she’d come here!” Lorena’s sharp, mocking voice echoed through the dark basement.

Esteban stepped into the light of the cellar bulb, holding an iron wrench, a cold, ruthless sneer covering his face. “Give me the folder, Camila,” he demanded, stepping closer. “You always were too smart for your own good.”

To see how Camila turns the evidence against Esteban, continue reading below for Part 4.
