Part 2: The Hospital Corridor

Her mother’s voice didn’t sound angry over the phone, but it trembled with an intensity that sent a cold wave of panic straight through my chest. The car ride to the hospital felt endless. A thousand terrifying scenarios raced through my mind: Had Lily suffered a sudden complication? Had my son stepped out of line? Had his innocent gesture somehow backfired and upset her family?

When I finally reached the oncology wing, the hallway was strangely quiet. Lily’s mother was standing outside room 312, wiping her eyes with a crumpled tissue. The moment she saw me walking toward her, she didn’t offer a lecture or a stern word. Instead, her hands shook as she grabbed my arms and pulled me toward the small observation window on the door.

“Just look inside,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Look at what your boy brought into this room.”

I held my breath and leaned closer to the glass, preparing myself for the worst.

Inside, my son Aaron was sitting in the visitor’s chair right beside Lily’s bed. His newly shaved head gleamed softly under the harsh fluorescent lights. But he wasn’t sitting alone. Resting across his lap was an old, battered acoustic guitar, and laid out on the tray table between them were dozen of colorful, hand-drawn paper hats, beanies, and bandanas—each one decorated with jokes, inside references, and vibrant encouragement messages from their high school classmates.

Sitting across from Aaron on the window ledge was a professional photographer, quietly snapping pictures while Aaron strummed a soft, gentle melody. But it wasn’t just Aaron who had shaved his head.

Standing around Lily’s bed were four of Aaron’s closest friends from the high school track team. Every single one of them was completely bald, grinning from ear to ear, wearing matching t-shirts that read: Lily’s Security Detail.

To see Lily’s reaction and the hidden secret Aaron planned next, continue reading below for Part 3...
