The Art of the Prank
In moments of extreme peril, the brain works in mysterious ways. Poko didn’t freeze; instead, her mischievous instincts kicked into overdrive. She grabbed a large, overripe fig from the forest floor—a fermenting, sticky mess that smelled strongly of sour wine—and hurled it with perfect precision. 🥥
The mushy fruit struck the rogue silverback squarely between his eyes, exploding in a spectacular splash of purple pulp and seeds.
The rogue screeched to a halt, completely bewildered. He blinked rapidly, the sticky juice dripping into his eyes and blurring his vision. He shook his heavy head violently, sneezing as the pungent aroma filled his nostrils.
“Now!” Poko yelled.
Toko didn’t need to be told twice. He grabbed Poko’s hand, and the two of them bolted into the thickest part of the bamboo jungle. They moved like shadows—one dark, one light—weaving through the narrow stalks that cracked and groaned as they pushed past. Behind them, they could hear the furious roars of the blinded rogue, blindly smashing through the vegetation in a fit of rage.
Safe in the Sanctuary
They didn’t stop running until the air grew thin and the vegetation transitioned into the familiar, safe territory of the upper ridges. Panting heavily, they collapsed into a patch of soft clover beneath the watchful canopy of an ancient mahogany tree. 🌳
Toko rolled onto his back, his white fur stained with green chlorophyll and dark mud. Poko sat next to him, her ribs heaving as she tried to catch her breath. For a long minute, the only sound was the synchronized thumping of their exhausted hearts.
Then, Poko looked at Toko’s mud-splattered face and burst into a loud, barking laugh.
“You look like a walking swamp monster,” she wheezed, pointing a dark finger at his nose.
“Me? You’re the one who threw a rotten fig at a rogue silverback’s face!” Toko retorted, a wide grin spreading across his face. “That was either the bravest thing I’ve ever seen, or the absolute stupidest.”
“A little bit of both,” Poko admitted, leaning back against the sturdy trunk of the tree. “But it worked, didn’t it?”
Toko sat up, his expression softening as the adrenaline finally began to fade. He reached over, mirroring the exact gesture from earlier that morning, and gently brushed a stray leaf away from Poko’s forehead. The bond between them wasn’t just built on shared territory or troop survival; it was forged in these moments of chaotic loyalty.
“Thanks for having my back,” Toko said softly, his voice rumbling gently in his chest.
“Always,” Poko replied, nudging his shoulder with her own. “Besides, if that rogue took you, who else would let me pull their eyebrows off?”
As the afternoon sun broke through the canopy, painting the forest floor in dappled golden light, the two friends sat side by side. The dangers of the jungle were real, but as long as they had each other, they knew they could handle whatever wild adventure came crashing through the trees next. 🐵❤️
