Part 2: The Cipher in the Vault

Part 4: The Pocket Watch

My breath hitched. My hand flew reflexively to my coat pocket, fingers brushing against the cold, heavy silver of the pocket watch my father had given me for my eighteenth birthday.

“Never lose this, Julian,” he had told me on that rainy afternoon fourteen years ago. “It holds the exact time everything changes.”

“The watch…” I stammered, pulling the vintage timepiece into the fluorescent light of the storage unit. “The serial number on the back cover… it’s an algorithmic key.”

“Exactly,” Agent Miller nodded. “Karen realizes now that Raymond gave it to you before she ever entered your life. She texted you to come home alone because she intends to trade your life for that watch.”

Suddenly, the red emergency light on the storage unit’s ceiling began to flash. The security monitor showing the front gate of Route 9 Storage flickered, going dark one screen at a time.

“They tracked your cell phone signal, Julian,” Miller warned, stepping toward the open roll-up door and raising her weapon. “Karen’s team is already inside the complex.”

Tires screeched across the wet asphalt outside. Heavy boots slammed onto the pavement directly beyond the row of metal units.

“Julian, take the watch and get behind the reinforced steel wall in the back!” my father shouted through the intercom, his voice cracking with desperation. “Do not let her take it!”

“I’m not leaving you again, Dad,” I declared, my voice dropping into a cold, fierce calm I didn’t know I possessed. “Twenty years ago, you took the weight of this empire alone. Today, we finish it together.”
