Part 2: The Black Box

Part 3: The Unraveling

A sudden breeze rustled the lace curtains as the room temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. Douglas Reed half-rose from his chair, his face turning a sickly, mottled gray.

“Elizabeth,” he warned, his voice shaking. “That is enough. You will respect this table.”

“You never respected Mom,” Elizabeth said softly.

She reached into the box and pulled out a stack of hotel receipts from the Omni New Haven Hotel, dated between 1994 and 1998, alongside a series of handwritten letters on pink stationery signed by Douglas’s former senior partner, Richard Sterling.

“Mom never cheated on you, Dad,” Elizabeth said, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. “You spent thirty years dropping subtle hints that she was unfaithful—making everyone think I was the bastard child of an affair—to cover up the fact that you were the one having a decade-long relationship with your partner’s wife.”

Aunt Martha gasped, covering her mouth with a napkin. The eighteen guests sat frozen, no one daring to breathe.

“And when Richard Sterling found out,” Elizabeth continued, pulling out the second paternity document, “he didn’t sue you. He made a deal. You paid him off through shell accounts, and when Victoria and Jonathan were born…”

She slid two separate medical reports across the mahogany table.

“Jonathan. Victoria,” Elizabeth said, looking at her siblings. “You aren’t Douglas Reed’s biological children. You are Richard Sterling’s.”
