Part 1: The Gates of Gold

Part 4: The Total Liquidation

“Three point five billion dollars, David,” I said, stepping beside my father, looking down at my husband with a cold, unyielding detachment. “That is the exact amount you owe my family’s trust as of nine o’clock tonight.”

David dropped to his knees right there on the wet marble floor, weeping hysterically, grabbing at the hem of my father’s trousers. “Mr. Vance! Please! I don’t have three billion dollars! My entire company is only worth eight hundred million! If you call those loans, I’ll be completely bankrupt! I’ll go to prison!”

“Then I suggest you start liquidating,” my father replied, pulling his trousers away from David’s desperate grip as if touching a disease.

“Your corporate headquarters in Manhattan was seized by our legal team twenty minutes ago,” my father continued, his voice dropping into a flat, clinical tone. “Your luxury vehicles have been repossessed from your penthouse garage. By tomorrow morning, the news of your default will be broadcast across every major financial network in North America.”

David looked at me, tears streaming down his pale, wet face. “Elena… please! For the sake of our marriage! For the sake of our twins! Don’t do this to me! Give me a chance to fix it!”

“Our marriage ended the moment you let your mother call me a stray dog while I was bleeding in that hospital room, David,” I said softly, pulling a set of court-certified divorce and sole-custody papers from my coat pocket and dropping them onto the floor in front of his face. “Sign the full custody surrender, or my legal team will ensure you spend the next twenty years facing federal corporate fraud charges for the funds you diverted to your mistress.”

David looked at the pen rolling across the marble floor toward his hands, realizing that the empire he had boasted about for three years was nothing more than a sandcastle built on the mercy of the woman he had treated like garbage.
