Part 5: The Gift of Sound
Six months later, the clear spring sun broke over the quiet cemetery.
The lake case had concluded with my ex-husband receiving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Janice’s remains were recovered from the well and finally laid to rest in a warm, sunlit plot beneath a blooming cherry blossom tree, beside her grandmother.
Jeremy stood beside me at the headstone, holding a bouquet of fresh yellow daisies—Janice’s favorite flowers.
He no longer looked like the quiet, distant boy who walked in the shadows. His shoulders were relaxed, his eyes were bright, and the heavy burden of silence he had carried for eight long years had finally been lifted.
He knelt down on the grass, gently placing the daisies beside her marble headstone.
“I kept the secret until I was strong enough to protect Mom,” Jeremy whispered softly, his voice clear and resonant in the quiet afternoon air. “Now you can finally rest, Janice.”
He stood up, taking my hand in his. For five years of his early life, they had spoken with their eyes. But as we walked back to the car under the warm sunlight, I knew that his voice would never be silenced again. We had walked through the deepest dark, brought the truth into the light, and given my daughter the dignity, peace, and justice she had always deserved.
