My name is Emma Carter, and this is how it happened.

“The only misunderstanding was that you thought I was blind,” I said, speaking up for the first time. I stood up, placing a hand on my belly. “You thought I was just a heartbroken wife crying at home. But while you were at ‘late nights at the office,’ I was working with David and a forensic accountant.”

I turned my head to look directly at Olivia, whose expression of victory had mutated into pure terror.

“You see, Olivia, you always wanted my life,” I said softly, a genuine smile spreading across my lips. “You wanted my husband, you wanted my career, you wanted my happiness. Well, you can have him. But you aren’t getting a millionaire. You’re getting a man facing massive fraud charges.”

Judge Vance banged her gavel down with a resounding crack.

“In light of this egregious concealment of assets and blatant perjury, this court is freezing all accounts associated with Mr. Carter and Vanguard Logistics immediately,” the judge decreed. “Furthermore, the original settlement is void. Mrs. Carter is awarded 100% of the intellectual property rights, the marital home, and a temporary award of 80% of Mr. Carter’s remaining liquid assets pending a full criminal investigation into financial fraud.”

Daniel sank into his chair, deflated, looking ten years older.

Olivia stood up, backing away from him as if he were radioactive. “Wait, Your Honor! I didn’t know the money was stolen! I’m the victim here! We are supposed to get married at the city clerk’s office in an hour!”

“I suggest you get a lawyer of your own, Miss Bennett,” Judge Vance replied coldly. “Court is adjourned.”

As the judge exited, the courtroom erupted into chaos. Olivia grabbed her designer purse, screaming at Daniel. “You told me she was clueless! You told me we were set for life! Stay away from me!” She stormed out of the courtroom, her bordeaux dress swirling behind her, leaving Daniel entirely alone at the table.

Daniel looked up at me, his eyes pleading. “Emma… please. Think about our baby. We can work this out.”

I adjusted my coat over my belly and looked down at him, feeling absolutely nothing but a profound sense of peace. The tears I had refused to shed earlier were replaced by total clarity.

“I am thinking about my baby,” I said firmly. “And that’s why I’m making sure their father can never steal from us again.”

I turned my back on him and walked down the aisle of the courtroom. When the doors opened, the rain outside had stopped, and a sliver of sunlight was breaking through the Chicago clouds.

My mom was waiting by the exit, a huge smile on her face. I took a deep breath of the fresh, crisp air, rubbed my belly, and smiled.

My new life was just beginning, and it was going to be beautiful.
