Part 2: The Return Home
Adrian arrived at his mother’s estate in wealthy suburban Boston, carrying the twin boys in their matching car seats. Vanessa trailed behind him, stepping onto the marble floors as if she already owned the place. He was practically glowing, drunk on the thrill of public victory and the belief that he had finally humiliated the woman who had spent eight years making him feel small.
Evelyn sat in the dimly lit study, an untouched glass of whiskey resting on the side table.
“Mom!” Adrian called out, setting the carriers on the rug with a broad, arrogant smile. “It’s over. She signed. Without a single argument! The house, the lake property, my company shares—she walked away from all of it.”
Vanessa smoothed her dress, leaning against the doorframe with a triumphant grin. “We told you she was weak, Evelyn. She knew she couldn’t compete once I gave Adrian a real legacy.”
Evelyn didn’t look at the babies. She didn’t look at Vanessa. She slowly turned her gaze to her son, her face so deathly pale she looked like a marble statue in a crypt.
“You fool,” Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and profound, suffocating pity. “You absolute fool.”
Adrian’s smile wavered. “What are you talking about? I won! I took everything she had!”
“You didn’t take anything, Adrian,” Evelyn said, standing up on shaky legs, her eyes filling with bitter tears. “Claire didn’t sign that agreement out of weakness. She signed it because the moment she signed those papers, every legal protection she had extended over you for eight years officially expired.”
Adrian scoffed, adjusting his coat. “What protection? I don’t need her protection! I have my sons!”
Evelyn stepped forward, her voice dropping into a raspy, horrified whisper. “Wait… She didn’t tell you?”
