THE VANISHING DATES

My father lost my mother twelve years ago. For a long time, he refused to date anyone.

Then, almost overnight, everything changed. He signed up for dating apps and started meeting wonderful women.

But none of them stayed. At first, I assumed they simply weren’t compatible.

Then I noticed something strange. Every relationship ended in exactly the same way. The date would go perfectly. They would go on dates. And then… the next morning… the woman was gone.

No call. No message. No explanation. My father’s heart broke every time. “I don’t understand,” he murmured. “They all seemed so happy.”

After the sixth woman disappeared, I couldn’t ignore it any longer. Something was fishy. So, I asked my best friend, Rachel, for a favor. “Go out with him.”

She laughed. “Are you kidding?” “I’m serious.” Reluctantly, she agreed.

The date went even better than expected. Rachel called me afterward. “Your dad is amazing,” she said. “I can’t believe no one gave him a chance.”

The next morning… she was gone, too. No answer. Straight to her voicemail. That evening, she finally sent me a text message: “Don’t contact me. Please.”

It wasn’t Rachel. I went straight to her apartment. Her car was still there. The headlights were on. But no one answered.

The next afternoon, she called. Her voice was trembling. “I can’t explain over the phone.” “When can we meet?” I asked. “Tomorrow morning.”

I barely slept that night. The next morning, I caught up with her right outside her office before she went in.

“What happened?” I demanded. “What did my father do?” Then she showed me her phone.
