But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
I couldn’t hold it back for a single second longer.
I threw my heavy head back, squeezed my eyes completely shut, and let out a roaring, thunderous laugh. 😂
My mouth opened wide, showing every single one of my massive, yellowed teeth.
It wasn’t a subtle chuckle; it was a deep, belly-shaking guffaw that rattled the tree branches above me.
I laughed so hard my heavy chest heaved, my hand slapping against my thick stomach in pure, uncontrolled joy.
I rolled backward into the soft green leaves, completely abandoning my terrifying persona.
The sound echoed through the misty mountains, a booming, rumbling explosion of absolute comedy.
At first, the humans were absolutely petrified.
They thought the terrifying monster of the forest was letting out a battle cry.
The guide dropped his walking stick, and the woman with the binoculars hid behind a tree.
But then, they looked closer at my face.
They saw the wrinkles around my squeezed-shut eyes.
They saw the relaxed, joyful curve of my wide mouth.
They realized that the king of the jungle was quite literally laughing his head off at their clumsy friend.
The man in the bush finally managed to untangle himself and popped his head out.
He had a single green leaf stuck perfectly to his forehead.
He looked at me, a gigantic beast roaring with laughter, and he looked at his friends.
Slowly, a sheepish grin spread across his red, embarrassed face.
He let out a nervous little chuckle.
That tiny chuckle was all it took to break the tension entirely.
The rest of the group started giggling, trying to cover their mouths politely.
But laughter is contagious, even across entirely different species.
Soon, the entire group of humans was laughing just as hard as I was.
The guide was wiping tears from his eyes, leaning against a mahogany tree for support.
My fellow gorillas, who had been hiding in the upper canopy, started to peek down at the commotion.
My strict, serious uncle dropped a handful of berries in pure shock.
He looked at me rolling on the ground, then he looked at the humans laughing with me.
For a moment, I thought I was going to be exiled from the troop forever.
But then, I saw the corners of his stern mouth start to twitch.
Even the elders couldn’t resist the sheer absurdity of the situation.
Soon, the entire jungle was filled with a chorus of chuckles, giggles, and deep, rumbling belly laughs.
It was the most unprofessional display of primate behavior in the history of the forest.
We had completely ruined our fearsome reputation in a matter of seconds.
National Geographic would have been absolutely appalled by our lack of decorum.
But in that beautiful, noisy, chaotic moment, none of that mattered at all.
We weren’t monsters of the mist, and they weren’t strange invaders in weird clothing.
We were just two groups of primates, sharing a fantastic joke on a Tuesday morning.
