Uncovering Family Deception
Part Two of the Story… 👇
Family Financial Deception
I stepped away from the security monitor and walked toward the grand mahogany front doors of my home. The pounding continued, rhythmic and demanding, echoing off the high ceilings of the entryway. Opening the heavy door, I stood in the doorway with an expression of quiet indifference, looking at the four people gathered on my porch. My mother’s face was flushed with anger, her cheeks blotched red against her neatly styled hair. Dad stood slightly behind her, his hands jammed deep into his coat pockets, looking everywhere except at my eyes. Vanessa was practically trembling with rage, her knuckles white as she clutched her expensive designer handbag—a handbag I now knew had been purchased with my emergency medical line of credit.
Beside Vanessa stood the tall man in the charcoal coat. His expression was entirely different from the rest of them. He was not angry; he looked utterly bewildered, his eyes darting between the expansive architecture of my residence, the pristine stone courtyard, and the woman he had apparently been told was an unemployed, unstable burden living on the fringes of society.
“How could you do this?” Mom demanded before I could even speak. She didn’t offer a greeting, nor did she acknowledge the bitter morning cold. “The emergency card was declined at the catering hall this morning! We were picking up the final orders for Thanksgiving dinner, and the manager treated us like criminals in front of everyone! Do you have any idea how humiliating that was?”
“You canceled the card,” Vanessa spat, stepping forward, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. “You ruined everything on purpose because you’re jealous. You couldn’t handle the fact that I’m finally happy, so you decided to throw a temper tantrum and sabotage my entire day!”
I remained silent, resting my arm against the frame of the door, allowing their voices to carry across the quiet neighborhood. I looked past Vanessa and met the eyes of the man beside her.
“You must be Daniel,” I said calmly, my voice steady and measured. “I would offer to invite you all inside, but as you were told yesterday, my presence is far too embarrassing for polite company.”
Daniel cleared his throat, shifting uncomfortably. “I… wait, what?” He looked at Vanessa, his brow furrowing deeply. “Vanessa, what is she talking about? You told me your sister lived in a shared basement apartment across town and was struggling to find work. You said she was constantly begging your parents for financial support.”
Vanessa’s face went completely pale. She turned to Daniel, her hands waving dismissively in a frantic effort to regain control of the narrative. “Daniel, sweetie, don’t listen to her. She’s… she’s having one of her episodes. I told you she gets confused and manipulative when she doesn’t get her way. She probably borrowed this place or is house-sitting for one of her clients!”
A soft, cold laugh escaped my lips. “Borrowing it? Daniel, if you’d like to check the property registry, Blackwood Holdings owns this estate, along with several commercial properties downtown. I am the sole owner of Blackwood Forensic Partners.”
Daniel’s eyes widened significantly. The name clearly registered with him. Anyone working in high-level finance in this state knew the reputation of my firm. We were the investigators called in when corporate boards suspected millions had vanished into thin air. “Blackwood Forensic Partners? You’re Emma Blackwood?”
“She’s lying!” Dad spoke up for the first time, his voice raspy and strained as he finally looked at me. “Emma, stop this nonsense right now! You’ve gone too far this time. We are your family! You don’t turn off a card on Thanksgiving morning over a simple misunderstanding. You hand over the new card right now, or so help me—”
“Or what, Dad?” I interrupted, dropping the casual posture and taking a deliberate step forward into the threshold. My voice lost all lightness, replaced by the precise, authoritative tone I used in federal depositions. “What are you going to do? Are you going to sign another loan application using my electronic signature without my knowledge? Because my legal team spent the early hours of this morning documenting the two fraudulent filings you made last month.”
Dad froze, his jaw dropping slightly. The color drained from his face so quickly he looked suddenly ten years older. Beside him, Mom took a step back, her aggressive posture instantly collapsing into panic.
