“Daniel, wait!” Vanessa turned and ran after him as he walked quickly toward his car, leaving my parents standing alone on the cold pavement in front of my porch.

Mom turned back to me, her eyes wide with fear as the full weight of the situation finally settled upon her. “Emma… what about the house? You wouldn’t throw your own parents out, would you?”

“The occupancy extension was left unsigned yesterday,” I said, my voice completely free of hatred, replaced only by a firm, unwavering finality. “My attorney will be in touch on Monday morning to outline the timeline for vacation of the premises. I suggest you spend today packing rather than celebrating.”

Without waiting for a response, I stepped back into the warmth of my home and closed the heavy mahogany doors, locking out the noise of the past for good.
