My fingers trembled against the rough, frayed fabric of the backpack as the attorney sat down in the plastic chair Edward had occupied just hours before. The quiet hum of the hospital monitors in the hallway felt distant, drowned out by the sudden, heavy pulse in my ears.
“Open it, Grace,” the attorney urged softly, his eyes reflecting a deep, solemn respect. “Edward spent his final days ensuring every piece was placed exactly where it needed to be.”
I unzipped the main compartment. Inside lay a thick, faded leather journal, a modern steel thumb drive, and several official land deeds bearing the embossed seal of the state supreme court. Resting at the very bottom was a yellowed newspaper clipping from thirty years ago.
I pulled out the clipping first. The headline, printed in dark, bold lettering, read: FOUNDER OF VANCE BIOTECH VANISHES FOLLOWING CORPORATE CONSPIRACY.
My breath caught in my throat. The photograph accompanying the article showed a younger Edward—sharp-eyed, standing proudly in front of a multi-million-dollar research facility, looking like an entirely different person than the fragile man who had worn a hospital gown.
“Your husband wasn’t a forgotten man, Grace,” the attorney explained, leaning forward. “Edward Vance built the core molecular patents behind modern oncology treatments. But thirty years ago, his business partners and his own brother betrayed him. They altered clinical research, framed him for financial fraud, and stripped him of his entire life’s work, forcing him into hiding to protect his life.”
I looked down at the soda-can pull tab still resting on my finger, my mind reeling. “Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because if he tried to reclaim his assets as Edward Vance, his brother’s legal team would have tied it up in probate for decades until his death,” the lawyer said. “He needed a legal heir—someone with an unblemished character, someone who cared for him when he had nothing to offer. By marrying you, Edward legally transferred his entire suppressed patent portfolio, his remaining land trusts, and a four-hundred-million-dollar estate directly into your name.”
