Part 2

But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!

Marcus took three long strides into the enclosure, his heavy black boots thudding loudly against the concrete. 🥾

He didn’t look up at the ropes immediately, keeping his eyes firmly glued to the walkway.

Barnaby felt a cold sweat break out beneath his thick layers of snowy white fur.

He squeezed the hemp rope with enough force to crush a coconut, keeping his lower body perfectly still.

Out in the viewing area, the crowd watched the sudden drama unfold with absolute fascination.

The photographer in the neon hat clicked his shutter even faster, capturing the tense look on the ape’s face.

Barnaby knew he had to create a massive distraction before Marcus reached the base of his climbing structure.

If the keeper walked directly underneath him, he would definitely notice the shiny silver card.

Barnaby let out a soft, low grunt, deliberately drawing the attention of the visitors outside.

The crowd reacted instantly, pointing and whispering louder to see if the white gorilla would move.

Marcus heard the sudden noise from the crowd and finally snapped his head upward toward the ropes.

His eyes locked onto Barnaby, scanning the ape’s posture with a mixture of suspicion and exhaustion.

“Hey there, buddy,” Marcus said, his voice echoing slightly in the large enclosure.

“You haven’t seen a little shiny piece of plastic laying around here, have you?”

Barnaby maintained his stoic expression, looking completely innocent as he stared at the far wall. 🙈

He puckered his lips slightly, giving the impression of a creature completely detached from worldly concerns.

Marcus sighed heavily, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked around the base of the artificial tree.

“I am dead meat if I don’t find that card before the supervisor comes around,” Marcus muttered to himself.

He turned his back for just a brief second to check inside a hollow log near the small waterfall.

That single second was exactly the window of opportunity that Barnaby had been waiting for all morning.

With an incredibly smooth, practiced motion, Barnaby slid his left foot backward along the thick rope.

He used his toes to nudge the silver keycard into a small, deep crevice where the rope met the steel support post.

The card slid perfectly into the narrow gap, completely hidden from view but easily reachable later.

Barnaby let out a quiet sigh of relief, his shoulders relaxing as the immense pressure lifted.

He could finally scratch that unbearable itch on his left ear, using his knuckles to find sweet relief. 🐒

Marcus turned back around from the hollow log, looking completely defeated and empty-handed.

“Guess it’s not in here,” the keeper mumbled, shaking his head as he walked back toward the steel door.

“Must have dropped it out by the break room or near the main entrance gates.”

As the heavy steel door clicked shut behind the keeper, Barnaby knew the coast was finally clear.
