Part 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
Standing there in the dappled sunlight was Malika, Kalia’s older sister, who had vanished during the great dry season years ago.
Malika didn’t look like the sleek, carefree explorer she used to be; her fur was matted with mud, and her eyes carried a deep, heavy exhaustion.
She took one look at Kalia, then shifted her gaze down to the two tiny twins clinging tightly to Kalia’s dark chest. 😲
A low, rumbling grunt escaped Malika’s chest, a sound filled with so much relief and sorrow that Kalia felt her anger instantly melt away.
Kalia remained seated, her powerful arms still locking the babies in a protective embrace, her mind racing to process the sight.
The twins, sensing no immediate danger from the newcomer, began to squirm, their little eyes locked onto their long-lost aunt.
The brother on the right let out a tiny sneeze, breaking the heavy tension that had settled over the damp, green clearing. 🌳
Malika took two slow, deliberate steps forward, sinking into the soft grass just a few feet away from the new mother.
She didn’t try to touch the babies, knowing the unspoken rules of motherhood demanded distance until trust was fully established.
Instead, she pointed a long, leathery finger back toward the deep, misty valley from which she had just emerged.
With a series of soft hand gestures and low vocalizations, Malika began to convey a story that made Kalia’s blood run cold.
The runaway father hadn’t abandoned them at all; he hadn’t fled to the sunny side of the mountain to eat sweet bamboo.
He had been captured by a rival troop from the western cliffs while trying to gather the rare, nutrient-rich roots Kalia needed.
Malika had spent the last three days tracking them through the rocky terrain, watching from the shadows as they held him guarded.
She had come back to find Kalia because she knew she couldn’t stage a rescue mission entirely on her own against an entire troop. 💥
Kalia looked down at her two sons, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird as the reality settled in.
The tiny baby on the left looked up at her, his eyes so incredibly similar to the father who was currently trapped in the high rocks.
The baby on the right reached out again, his little fingers brushing against his brother’s face as if offering comfort in his own way.
She couldn’t leave them here alone in the tall grass where leopards roamed, but she also couldn’t leave her partner to fate.
Malika seemed to read her sister’s mind, leaning forward and placing a reassuring hand gently on Kalia’s tense knee.
The older sister offered a solution, gesturing that she would stay behind in this hidden clearing to guard the precious twins.
It was a massive risk, but looking into Malika’s determined eyes, Kalia knew it was the only real choice she had.
She spent the next few minutes nursing the little ones, filling their small bellies before the long, uncertain hours ahead. 🍼
When she finally transferred the twins into Malika’s waiting arms, the babies let out small whines of confusion and protest.
They looked back at Kalia, their tiny faces wrinkled with concern as they realized their mother was stepping away from them.
Kalia forced herself not to look back, turning her massive body toward the dark, dense foliage of the western trail.
She moved with an incredible, silent speed that defied her massive size, her knuckles tearing through the soft earth as she ran.
The anger that had fueled her earlier was completely gone, replaced by a fierce, burning wave of pure, protective adrenaline.
She climbed the steep, rocky incline of the western ridge, her breath coming in short, controlled bursts as the air grew thinner. ⛰️
By the time the sun began to dip below the canopy, painting the sky in deep shades of orange and purple, she reached the summit.
