Part 2

The Great Jungle Nursery Rebellion

A Breath Away From Discovery

The silence in the nursery was so absolute you could hear the distant buzz of a dragonfly outside the window screen. Thomas stood frozen, his head tilted slightly, like a hound catching a faint scent on the wind. The green canvas sling cradling the four of us swayed by a mere fraction of an inch, a tiny pendulum of pure guilt. I could feel Kiki’s arm trembling above me, his long, muscular fingers losing their grip on the rough fabric. If he let go, we would all cascade to the floor in a tangled mess of orange limbs and stolen contraband.

Thomas took a deep breath, exhaling a long sigh that rattled through his mustache. He reached out a hand, his thick fingers moving directly toward the edge of our canvas hideout.

The Sweet Scent of Betrayal

Just as the keeper’s hand touched the rough material, Pippin let out a tiny, involuntary squeak. It wasn’t a roar or a cry of defiance; it was the sound of a baby ape who had accidentally squeezed his stolen banana a little too hard, causing the warm fruit to squirt through his knuckles. 🍌

“Who’s there?” Thomas asked, his voice softening with amusement rather than anger.

He pulled back the top layer of the canvas, and the bright, uncompromising morning light hit our eyes. There we were, stacked neatly like four ginger-furred packages in a delivery crate. Kiki still had his arm raised high, frozen like a statue. Barnaby was buried to his nose in the bright red cap, his eyes wide and blinking. Milo tried to look completely innocent by staring directly at the ceiling, pretending he was an entirely different animal altogether.

“Well, well, well,” Thomas chuckled, leaning down with his hands on his knees. “The entire crew of the HMS Mischief, accounted for.”

A Sudden Masterstroke

But we hadn’t planned this escape for weeks just to surrender at the first sign of trouble. Before Thomas could reach in to scoop us up one by one, Barnaby made his move. With a sudden explosion of youthful energy, he lunged forward and slapped the stolen red keeper’s cap directly over Thomas’s face, blinding him completely. 🧢

“Hey! What the—” Thomas stumbled backward, his hands flailing as he tried to untangle the fabric from his nose and glasses.

“Go, go, go!” Kiki shrieked, using the momentum to kick off from the wall, launching our canvas hammock into a wild, chaotic swing.

We spilled out of the sling like a waterfall of orange fur. Pippin scrambled across the concrete floor on all fours, his precious banana clamped firmly between his teeth. Milo grabbed the hem of Thomas’s trousers, giving them a sharp tug that sent the poor keeper sliding across the polished floor in his smooth leather boots. It was absolute, glorious pandemonium.

The Great Escape to the High Canopy

Free from the canvas trap, our true instincts took over. We didn’t belong on the flat, boring ground of the nursery floor; we belonged up where the air was sweet and the branches were thick. 🌴

Kiki led the charge, leaping from the top of a plastic storage bin onto the mesh wiring of the indoor enclosure wall. His long fingers found the grips with effortless grace, his small body moving with the fluid agility of a creature born for the treetops. Barnaby followed right behind him, making a triumphant chirping sound that echoed off the high rafters.
