Scaling the Rafters

“Wait for me!” Milo squealed, his short legs scrambling to find traction on the slick metal framing of the doorway.

I reached down from the lower crossbar, extending my arm as far as it would stretch. Our fingers locked, a solid and reassuring grip of pure brotherhood. With a hard pull, I hoisted Milo up onto the ledge just as Thomas finally managed to rip the red cap off his face.

The keeper looked up, his hair completely disheveled, a mixture of utter disbelief and deep affection painted across his face. “You little rascals! Get down from there before you hurt yourselves!”

But we were already twenty feet in the air, perched safely on the thick wooden support beams that ran across the ceiling of the sanctuary. Up here, the world looked entirely different. The humans below looked small, and the open sky outside the high ventilation windows looked incredibly vast and inviting.

Pippin found a comfortable spot where two beams met, sat down cross-legged, and finally peeled back the skin of his hard-earned banana. He took a massive bite, his eyes closing in pure, unadulterated bliss.

“See?” Pippin mumbled around a mouthful of fruit. “Totally worth the danger.”

Freedom in the Sunshine

From our high perch, we could see the edge of the real jungle just beyond the sanctuary fences. The deep emerald leaves danced in the morning breeze, whispering secrets of a wider world that waited for us when we grew older. For now, this high rafter was our kingdom. 👑

Thomas stood below us, shaking his head and laughing as he realized he had been completely outmaneuvered by a band of toddlers. He picked up his clipboard from the floor, dusting off the pages.

“Alright, enjoy your breakfast,” Thomas called up to us, pointing a finger with a warm smile. “But when that banana is gone, you four are coming down for your checkup!”

We chattered back in unison, a chorus of happy, defiant little voices echoing through the rafters. We had the sun on our backs, the wind in our fur, and a whole morning of freedom ahead of us. The great nursery rebellion had been a roaring success. ☀️
