Part 2

The Great Pastry Heist of Sector 4 🥐

The tension inside the sanctuary enclosure was thick enough to cut with a banana leaf. Barnaby stood like a mountain of reddish-brown fur, looming over his dramatic little brother, Pip. Outside the glass, Director Vance folded his arms, his face turning an impressive shade of crimson that closely matched a ripe tomato. Marcus remained frozen on the floor, still clutching his keys like a lifeline.

Pip slowly retracted his tongue from the glass, realizing that pointing the finger at a two-hundred-pound older brother while trapped in the same room was structurally a bad tactical move. He offered a tiny, weak smile, his upper lip quivering as he tried to look as innocent as a newborn primate. 🐒

A Battle of Wills and Pastries

Director Vance tapped his polished leather shoe against the concrete floor. The sound echoed rhythmically, a ticking clock of impending doom for Marcus’s career.

“Marcus,” Vance said, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous, quiet rumble. “I spent three weeks on a waiting list for that specific organic, triple-glazed pastry. The baker only makes five a day using yeast imported from the Swiss Alps.”

“Sir, I understand your frustration,” Marcus said, carefully rising to his feet and wiping the dust off his uniform trousers. “But look at the bright side. Barnaby’s coat has never looked glossier. The honey glaze really brings out his natural highlights.”

Vance did not find it funny. He stepped closer to the glass, his eyes scanning the crime scene.

Inside, Barnaby chose that exact moment to scratch his stomach contentedly, letting out a soft grunt of pure satisfaction. He reached down, picked up a tiny piece of stray puff pastry from the wood shavings, and delicately placed it on his tongue like a gourmet food critic.

Pip watched this display of casual dominance with absolute horror. He turned back to Marcus, tapping frantically on the glass to get his attention.

“Do something!” Pip’s frantic gestures screamed. “He’s going to eat me next to cover his tracks!”

The Cover-Up Plan Flops

Marcus knew he had to act fast before Vance decided to write a formal disciplinary report. He reached into his utility belt and pulled out a standard-issue enrichment treat—a slightly bruised, thoroughly unglamorous banana. 🍌

He held it up to the glass, trying to draw Vance’s attention away from the crumpled bakery box.

“Look, Director! A perfect distraction! We can just pretend the pastry never existed, and I’ll conduct a thorough investigation into how the box entered the habitat.”

Vance sneered, looking at the banana as if it had insulted his ancestors.

“Do you think I am a fool, Marcus? That box has my name written on it in calligraphy. It was delivered straight to the staff lounge. The lock on the lounge window has been broken for two days.”

Marcus winced. He had forgotten that Barnaby possessed the problem-solving skills of a seasoned safecracker when high-calorie carbohydrates were on the line.

Inside the enclosure, Barnaby suddenly took a massive stride toward Pip. The baby ape let out a silent shriek, his arms flying up in the air as he pressed his back entirely flat against the viewing window. His face contorted into the universal expression of a sibling who knows they are about to get sat on.
