I helped Lila stand from the hard plastic chair. She was far weaker than I had realized, her body swaying slightly as she took her first step. I immediately put my arm around her waist, supporting her weight completely as we walked side by side down the long corridor behind the nurse. Feeling her fragile frame against mine filled me with a sudden, fiercer determination than I had ever felt in my life. The passive routine I had built over the last two months—the empty apartment on Willow Lane, the meaningless work deadlines, the silent evenings—instantly lost all value. My place was right here, next to the woman who had spent years making my life warmer, even when her own was breaking apart.

Once we arrived at the room, the nurse helped Lila settle into the bed and adjusted the IV line that was feeding medicine into her arm. The room was quiet, lit only by the soft glow of the afternoon sun filtering through the window blinds. When the nurse left us alone, I brought a heavy armchair right up to the side of the mattress and sat down, taking Lila’s hand once again. We sat together in silence for a long time, watching the sunlight shift across the blanket, until the tense lines around her eyes finally began to smooth out as she rested.

Later that evening, as the hospital quieted down and the sky outside turned a deep twilight blue, Lila turned her head toward me on the pillow. In the soft light, she asked me if I was really going to stay, reminding me that the road ahead would be long, difficult, and full of uncertainty. I looked her directly in the eyes and told her that two months ago I thought leaving was the only way to escape our shared pain, but seeing her today had made me realize that leaving was the biggest mistake I had ever made. I promised her that no matter how long the treatment took, or how difficult the days ahead became, she would never have to sit alone in a hospital hallway again. A small, genuine smile touched her lips for the first time in months, and as she drifted off to sleep, I settled into the chair beside her, ready to face whatever tomorrow would bring together.
