Marcus’s hands began to shake as he pulled out his personal wallet, desperately sliding out his private debit and credit cards. He handed three different cards to the manager, demanding they be charged immediately to cover the tab.

The manager took them to the portable terminal, swiped the first one, and shook his head. “Declined.”

He swiped the second. “Declined.”

He swiped the third. “Insufficient funds.”

Because the fraud protocol had been initiated by Arthur and Simone, the bank had automatically frozen every cross-collateralized personal account Marcus owned pending a full judicial review. In his greed, Marcus had used his personal assets as backing for his illicit corporate access, meaning the moment one fell, every single piece of his financial life fell with it.

Chloe stood up from the booth, her face pale. She grabbed her designer purse, tossed the velvet necklace box onto the table, and glared at Marcus with utter contempt. “You lied to me. You don’t have anything.”

“Chloe, wait! It’s just a temporary freeze!” Marcus pleaded, reaching out for her arm, but she backed away, shaking her head before turning on her heel and walking briskly toward the exit, escorted out by one of the security guards.

Two uniformed police officers entered the lobby of the club moments later, walking directly toward Marcus with a printed copy of the bank’s emergency stop-payment order and an authorization warrant.

Across town, sitting in a quiet, dimly lit diner with her father, Simone watched her phone screen light up with a notification from her bank’s security dashboard. A simple text message appeared from the senior fraud analyst: Target transaction attempted and blocked. Accounts secured. Law enforcement notified.

Simone set her phone face down on the table, took a slow sip of her warm tea, and looked at her father. Arthur offered a gentle, knowing smile, reached across the table, and squeezed her hand.

Marcus had spent years believing he was the smartest person in the room, but he had completely forgotten one fundamental truth: when you cross a woman whose father built the very security systems you are trying to break, every shortcut you take leads straight to your own downfall.
