According to the letter, Layla had learned that her pregnancy had complicated plans that involved the forced liquidation of her family’s historic estate. When she refused to sign over the property deeds, the atmosphere in her home changed drastically. She realized that her safety was compromised and chose to play along while building a comprehensive evidence file with private security professionals.
“Furthermore,” Mr. Vance said, raising his voice slightly as he reached the final paragraph, “my client requested that the local authorities be provided with a copy of these findings prior to this gathering. In accordance with her explicit directions, official representatives from the county precinct were delivered the complete file earlier this morning.”
As if on cue, the heavy doors at the rear of the sanctuary clicked open. Two plainclothes investigators stepped quietly into the aisle, standing patiently by the entrance.
The silence in the church was absolute. Marcus turned around slowly, his eyes locking onto the officers standing at the back of the room. The woman beside him hurriedly grabbed her handbag, stood up, and walked quickly down the side aisle toward the side exit, leaving Marcus completely alone in the front pew.
I stood up slowly from my row, looking down at the man who had walked into my sister’s memorial service with such arrogance only an hour before. The confusion and false grief he had displayed had vanished entirely, replaced by the quiet, undeniable realization that Layla had seen through every move long before the end.
Mr. Vance closed the folder, slid it back into his briefcase, and looked toward the altar. The truth had finally begun to come to light, but as the investigators walked down the center aisle toward Marcus, I knew this was only the first chapter in securing justice for my sister.
