I looked at Marcus—really looked at him. In the past, his harsh words would have made me shrink back, second-guessing myself, apologizing for things I hadn’t done. But looking at him now, flanked by the man whose family he had wronged, the veil lifted completely. He wasn’t a powerful, successful man who had outgrown me. He was a frightened charlatan terrified that the world would finally see behind the curtain.
“I didn’t bring Adrian to cause a scene, Marcus,” I said softly, stepping up beside Adrian. “I brought him because I wanted to show you that I moved forward. I had no idea about your past with his brother. But now that I do, it all makes sense. You didn’t leave me because I was ordinary. You left because I was the last remaining witness to the time in your life when you had nothing, before you built your life on someone else’s work.”
Marcus opened his mouth to reply, his face twisting into anger, but a soft voice interrupted him from behind.
“Marcus? Is everything alright?”
It was his new wife, dressed in a stunning lace gown, looking between us with genuine confusion. She held a flute of champagne, her smile fading as she sensed the palapable tension standing near the bar.
Marcus turned around quickly, his posture stiffening as he forced a smile. “Yes, darling. Everything is fine. Just… catching up with old acquaintances.”
Adrian took my hand in his, giving it a gentle, reassuring squeeze. He looked at the bride with a polite, respectful nod. “Congratulations on your marriage,” Adrian said softly, his voice devoid of malice. “We were just leaving. We wouldn’t want to take up any more of your special evening.”
Marcus looked at Adrian, a unspoken plea in his eyes, terrified that Adrian would say more in front of his new wife and her family. But Adrian didn’t need to. The seed was planted, the shadow cast, and Marcus knew that his past was no longer buried in the dark.
We turned and walked away together, crossing the grand hall toward the heavy oak doors that led out into the cool evening air. Behind us, the music played on, but the heavy weight that had rested on my shoulders for years was finally gone. As we stepped out into the night, I looked over at Adrian, grateful not for the revenge, but for the truth that had finally set me free.
