Before security could even step in, all three girls abandoned their formal positions on the stage. Leaving their diplomas on the podium, they ran down the side stairs in their flowing caps and gowns, rushing down the carpeted aisle toward the back of the auditorium. They dropped down to the floor right beside me, wrapping their arms around my shoulders, hugging me tightly, and pulling me into a warm, familiar embrace. We sat together on the carpet of that massive hall while thousands of people continued to applaud around us, but in that moment, the noise faded away completely.

Nadia leaned in close to my ear, whispering that I had spent my whole life being their safety net, and now it was their turn to take care of me. Camille pressed her cheek against my worn jacket, telling me that I was the greatest father any child could have ever prayed for. Zora placed the heavy wooden frame into my lap, guiding my calloused hands over the polished brass plaque. Looking into the tear-filled eyes of the three bright, confident, and independent young women standing before me, I realized that every single sacrifice, every missed opportunity, every aching joint, and every lonely night had led to this exact moment. I hadn’t lost twenty-two years of my life at all; I had used those years to build the most valuable, beautiful legacy imaginable, wrapped in the boundless love of the three daughters who were truly my own.
