I felt the ground beneath my feet begin to shift. “A child?”

“Three years ago, Brenda resurfaced,” Eleanor continued, her voice barely audible. “She was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disease and could no longer care for the boy. She threatened to make the situation public and file for back-child support in a way that would drag our family through the mud unless Nathan provided for them privately. Nathan was terrified. He was terrified of losing you, terrified of how it would shatter your life with Sophie, and terrified of what the legal battle would do to his reputation and his career.”

“So he chose to lie to me for three years?” My voice rose slightly, the indignation spilling over. “He paid her off and hid a child from me?”

“No, Emily,” Eleanor said firmly, standing up and reaching for my hands, though I pulled back. “That is the part Nathan didn’t know until three weeks ago. The boy… he isn’t Nathan’s son.”

I stared at her, completely bewildered. “What?”

“Mark had suspicions from the very beginning,” Eleanor explained, tears streaming down her face. “While Nathan was blindly paying for the apartment and the medical care out of guilt and fear, Mark hired a private investigator to track down Brenda’s history. Three weeks ago, the DNA results came back. The boy belongs to someone else entirely. Brenda had been blackmailing Nathan, taking advantage of his guilt over a past he thought was his responsibility.”

The room seemed to spin. The pieces of the puzzle began to rearrange themselves in my mind, but the picture was still incomplete. “If Nathan knows the boy isn’t his, why is he still paying? Why were you talking yesterday about needing more time before I found out?”

Eleanor dropped her gaze to the floor, her hands trembling violently. “Because… Nathan doesn’t know yet. Mark and I haven’t told him.”

A chill ran down my spine. “You haven’t told your own son that he’s being extorted?”

“Brenda’s condition worsened last month,” Eleanor confessed, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “She named a legal guardian in her will—a man with a dangerous criminal record who is trying to gain custody of the boy just to take control of the trust fund Nathan set up. If Nathan cuts off the money now or reveals the truth to the authorities without legal custody protections in place, that innocent twelve-year-old child will be handed over to a man who will destroy his life. Nathan loves that little boy, Emily. Even knowing the truth might break him, but walking away right now would destroy the child.”
