As the music started playing again, Eli and I walked out to the balcony overlooking the school courtyard. The cool evening breeze blew gently, rustling the panels of the denim dress. We looked down at the painted patch from Mom’s old jeans, remembering the summer she spent laughing while repainting the kitchen walls.

For almost a year, we had felt trapped in a house dominated by greed and cruel remarks. But standing there under the stars, surrounded by the warmth of our community and holding onto the memories stitched directly into my dress, we knew that the darkest chapter of our lives was officially over. We were finally free, holding the keys to our own future, and carrying our mother’s love with us every single step of the way.
