Commissioner Cole stepped closer to Adrian. “Mr. Westbrook, Dr. Chen is currently completing an official medical assessment. Based on the preliminary findings and the visible injuries, along with statements recorded earlier tonight, you are being taken in for questioning regarding domestic assault.”
“You can’t do this!” Adrian shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he stepped back toward the wall. “My lawyers will hear about this! You’re ruining everything I’ve built!”
“You ruined it yourself the moment you put your hands on my daughter,” I replied quietly. “Your promotion is revoked. The board will vote formally within the hour, and my thirty-eight percent vote will ensure you never hold an executive position in any company affiliated with our trust again.”
The uniformed officers stepped forward, swiftly securing Adrian’s wrists behind his back despite his loud protests. Celeste sank back into her chair, covering her face in complete defeat as her younger son stared at the floor in silence.
Dr. Chen walked back into the room, placing a soft blanket over Emily’s shoulders. “She needs proper medical treatment at the hospital, but she will recover fully,” he reported to the commissioner.
I walked over to Emily, gently helping her stand up. She wrapped her good arm around my waist and leaned into me, tears of relief finally falling freely down her cheeks.
“Let’s go home, sweetheart,” I whispered, holding her close. “It’s over now.”
Without looking back at the dinner table or the family that had tried to break her, we walked out into the cool evening air together, stepping into a future where she would never have to live in fear again.
