Lucas slumped into a chair, staring at the documents in panic. “Daniel, please. You can’t put a felony on my record. I just did what Mom told me to do!”
“You made your choice when you stood on those stairs filming my wife on her knees,” I said, looking him directly in the eye. “You laughed while she was humiliated. You proved who you are.”
My mother raised her chin, attempting one final show of defiance. “You wouldn’t dare put your own mother out on the street. Think of the public scandal. Think of what people will say.”
“People will say that I protect my wife and my son,” I answered calmly. “The scandal belongs entirely to you.”
I stood up, buttoned my jacket, and picked up my briefcase. I did not wait for them to speak another word. As I walked out of the room, I heard my mother’s panicked voice calling my name, followed by Lucas arguing frantically with her over who was going to pay for their legal representation.
Over the next month, the arrogance that had defined my mother’s life completely dissolved under the weight of reality. Deprived of access to the family wealth, she was forced to sell several of her personal jewelry pieces and liquidate private assets to repay the stolen funds and avoid a public criminal trial. She and Lucas moved into a modest rented apartment on the far side of town, far away from the elite social circles they had once ruled with an iron fist.
Four weeks later, in a quiet, sunlit room overlooking the ocean, Elena gave birth to our son, healthy and strong. As I held our baby boy in my arms and watched my wife rest peacefully, free from the shadow of cruelty and fear, I knew that the choices I made were the only ones that mattered. The old family was broken by its own greed, but the new family we built was grounded in love, strength, and unwavering loyalty.
