I turned away from the altar and faced the crowd. My father was already standing at the front of his pew, his face dark with anger toward Ryan, but his eyes filled with pure love and support for me. He stepped out into the aisle and held out his arm.

“Ready to go home, Maddie?” Dad asked quietly, his voice a solid anchor in the middle of the storm.

“More than ready, Dad,” I replied.

I took my father’s arm, holding my dress up with my free hand, and turned my back on Ryan Prescott, his mother, and the life built on secrets they had prepared for me. As I walked down the aisle toward the heavy wooden doors of the church, I stopped for a single moment right beside Olivia.

She looked at me, a single tear slipping down her cheek, her face pale with relief and regret.

“Thank you, Olivia,” I whispered so only she could hear. “You saved my life today.”

Olivia gave a small, barely visible nod. “Save yours,” she replied softly. “I’m going to go save mine.”

I walked out of the church into the bright, warm Savannah sunshine, leaving behind the dark shadow of the Prescott family. The air smelled of salt and sweet jasmine, clean and untainted. As my father opened the door of the car for me, I took a deep, full breath of fresh air for the first time in two years. I knew there would be hard days ahead, tears to shed, and a life to rebuild. But as the car pulled away from the church, leaving the whispers and the lies behind, I knew I had made the right choice. I hadn’t lost a husband; I had found my own strength.
