Before Thomas could interrupt again, Laura and Dr. Lawson approached from behind me. Laura gently placed a warm hand on my shoulder, stepping up to my side without a word of aggression, simply offering her quiet, unwavering presence. Dr. Lawson nodded politely to Thomas, his face completely calm.
“Emily,” Laura said softly, ignoring the three people standing in front of us. “Your colleagues are waiting near the main entrance for the class photo. We should head over.”
“Yes,” I said, offering a small, real smile. “Let’s go.”
I turned my back on Thomas, Karen, and Megan, stepping around them without another word. I didn’t look back to see their reactions, nor did I care to hear their explanations. They belonged to a chapter of my life that had been closed long ago.
As we walked out of the auditorium doors and into the bright afternoon sunlight, the air felt cool and fresh. Surrounded by the people who had truly cared for me, I held my diploma tightly in my hand, ready to step into the hospital the next morning not just as a survivor, but as a doctor who would never let a patient feel alone.
