“Charlotte,” Walter’s deep, authoritative voice boomed through the speaker. “Ethan tells me you left. This family has maintained its reputation for forty years, and we do not tolerate public scenes. Return home immediately so we can handle this internally.”
I looked at the illuminated screen of my laptop, watching the cursor blink over the send button.
“Walter,” I replied softly, my tone completely calm. “You spent three years ignoring how your wife treated me. Tonight, you ignored her burning me right in front of you. You built your whole life on the idea that your power protects you from consequences.”
There was a brief pause on the line, followed by a slight shift in his tone. “What are you talking about?”
“Check your email in about five minutes,” I said quietly. “You’ll find that your reputation is about to be the least of your concerns.”
I ended the call before he could respond, pressed the send button on my laptop, and watched the status bar change to ‘Sent.’ As I shifted my car into drive and pulled onto the highway toward a hotel, I finally took a deep, clear breath, knowing that by morning, the Calloways would learn the true cost of their cruelty.
