“Granted, Major. Thank you for the delivery,” I said, looking down at the heavy case resting on the porch step, which held nothing more than my personal military service records, framed commendations, and the original deed to the property.

“Understood, ma’am. Enjoy your home.”

I watched his car disappear down the road behind the deputies. When the dust settled, I stepped off the porch, walked down to the edge of the driveway, and picked up the scattered room plans Megan had dropped. I folded them neatly, placed them in the recycling bin near the garage, and walked back up to my front door.

I unlocked the deadbolt with my own key, stepped inside, and closed the door firmly behind me. The house was wide, bright, and completely mine. For the first time in twenty years, I took a deep breath, listened to the soft rustle of the pines outside the window, and knew I was finally home.
