Julian looked as if he had been struck. He reached out to grab my wrist, his face contorted in anger, but I caught his hand halfway through the gesture, using his momentum to push his arm back down with a swift, practiced motion that left him staggering backward once more.

“Rule two,” I said quietly, looking down at him. “Never put your hands on someone who knows exactly how fragile your world really is.”

Celeste stood frozen, her mind rapidly trying to calculate the damage, trying to find a leverage point that no longer existed. The quiet, submissive daughter-in-law she had groomed for months had systematically dismantled the Cole family’s financial cover in a single evening, all while wearing the very dress Celeste had purchased to mark her ownership.

“What do you want?” Celeste whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the elevator.

I reached down and picked up the thick leather-bound rulebook Julian had placed on the table. I flipped through the gilded pages slowly before dropping it into the crystal ice bucket where the unopened champagne sat cooling. The heavy book sank into the slush with a wet, heavy thud.

“I want my coat,” I said, picking up my small evening bag from the chair. “And I suggest Arthur begins drafting your defense strategy immediately. The federal marshals usually prefer to execute warrants early in the morning.”

I kicked off my jeweled silk slippers, leaving them resting beside the rulebook and the leather strap. I walked past Celeste, past the trembling attorney, and stepped straight into the open elevator cab. As the polished brass doors began to slide shut, I caught one last glimpse of Julian standing motionless in the center of the room, looking at the floor as if he were trying to understand how the world he built had vanished in less than ten minutes.

The elevator descended silently toward the lobby, carrying me away from the penthouse, away from the Cole name, and back into the quiet life I had never actually left.
