“Clara, you can’t do this to your husband!” Bernice shrieked. “He’s your family!”
“A family built on deceit is not a family, Bernice,” I replied coldly. “It’s a syndicate. And I am officially cutting my ties.”
Within twenty minutes, two police officers arrived to take my formal statement regarding the forged documents. As I handed over the bank records, the loan paperwork, and the physical evidence of the payments I had made over the years, the reality of the situation finally settled over Keaton. The color vanished from his skin entirely as the officers informed him that he would need to accompany them to the station to clarify the origin of the signed authorization forms.
Bernice wept loudly near the doorway, begging me to withdraw the claims, but I remained firm, standing near the window with my hands folded, watching as the consequences of their own choices finally caught up with them.
As Keaton was escorted toward the door, he turned back to look at me one last time, his face filled with a mix of shock and regret. “Clara, please… we can fix this. Just talk to me.”
“We tried talking,” I said softly, looking at the cold, untouched cups of instant noodles sitting on the dining table. “You told me that if I didn’t contribute, I didn’t get a say. Now it’s my turn. You didn’t contribute anything to this life, Keaton. So you don’t get to stay in it.”
The door closed behind them, leaving the apartment quiet for the first time in years. I sat down at the table, took a deep breath, and opened my notebook to write down the number of my corporate attorney. The road ahead would involve legal filings, asset separation, and formal police proceedings, but as I looked out over the city lights from my quiet living room, the crushing weight that had pressed down on my shoulders for years was finally gone. For the first time in a very long time, I was completely in control of my own future.
