He gently scooped up a single, tiny floating dandelion seed that had landed on the grass blades, carefully placing it right on top of Milo’s head like a delicate little crown.
Then Samson casually turned his massive body around, strolled lazily over to the deep shade beneath the huge oak tree, and plopped heavily down on his back with all four feet sticking straight up into the air. 😴
The ruler of the enclosure had zero interest in starting a big dramatic fight; he simply wanted to catch up on his afternoon nap before feeding time.
Milo sat frozen in the grass, the white dandelion seed floating softly off his head, feeling utterly ignored and abandoned by his own legendary father.
Marcus exhaled a long, heavy breath of relief and chuckled softly under his breath.
“Well, little buddy, looks like your heavy backup wasn’t interested in your crime spree,” Marcus said gently, resting his hands on his knees.
Head Keeper Sarah walked over to the wooden fence line, holding the box of fresh glaze donuts safely under her arm.
“What on earth is going on out here?” she asked, staring down at Milo’s adorable, guilty pose frozen in the middle of the lawn.
“Our little mastermind here was trying to launch a covert mission to steal my breakroom keys,” Marcus explained, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
Sarah looked down at Milo’s big, innocent, wide eyes and his hilarious, frozen posture in the grass.
She couldn’t help the warm smile that immediately spread across her face.
“You know very well that little gorillas aren’t allowed to eat processed sugar,” Sarah said softly, reaching deep into the pocket of her tan utility vest.
“But I think our tiny secret agent deserves a proper reward for putting on such incredible effort today.”
She pulled out a specially prepared gourmet treat that the sanctuary staff kept on hand for positive behavior training.
It was a fresh, crisp slice of juicy red apple lightly drizzled with golden organic honey and sprinkled with crushed walnuts. 🍎
She gently tossed the delicious slice through the wide gap between the wooden fence rails.
It landed with a soft, satisfying thud right in front of Milo’s small front paws.
Milo looked down at the shiny, honey-coated apple slice resting in the green grass.
Then he looked up at Keeper Marcus and Keeper Sarah, who were both watching him with affectionate smiles.
Then he looked back over his shoulder at the big wooden boundary fence where he had just failed his grand master plan.
His embarrassing hiccups were completely gone now.
He slowly lowered his rear end down onto the cool turf, sitting up straight like a tiny, well-behaved gentleman.
He reached out with both dark hands and delicately picked up the sweet fruit treat.
He took a small, careful, polite bite.
