“I spoke to my financial advisor,” Abigail said, her voice completely smooth and emotionless. “I’ve come to settle everything.”
Dr. Vance instantly pulled a stack of invoices from his leather briefcase, handing her a pen. “Sign right at the bottom, Mrs. Riley. We can transfer the charges immediately.”
Abigail took the papers, looked directly into Spencer’s eyes, and slowly tore the documents in half.
Spencer’s weak demeanor instantly vanished, replaced by shock. “Mom, what are you doing? That’s my treatment!”
“No, Spencer,” Abigail said softly, taking a step back as the door behind her opened, revealing Marcus Vance accompanied by two federal investigators and hospital administrators. “That’s your contract. And it’s over.”
As the officers moved into the room to read Dr. Vance his rights, Spencer scrambled out of bed, completely forgetting his act of physical weakness, shouting in confusion and panic. Abigail turned away, stepping back into the quiet hallway. She reached into her coat, feeling the crisp edge of the winning ticket, and walked out of the hospital into the cool night air, ready to start a life built finally on truth and her own freedom.
