Ethan did not look at the folder right away. He remained convinced that he was dealing with an elaborate hoax. He reached for the desk telephone to dial the authorities, but Jordan reached out and placed her hand over the receiver, pressing the hook down to cut the line. She informed him that he would not need to call the police, because the only people who were about to leave the premises were the employees standing behind that counter. She opened her phone once more and brought up a live video call, turning the screen around so that Ethan could see the face of the regional director of operations, a man he answered to directly.
The regional director’s voice came through the phone speaker loud and clear, filling the quiet space of the lobby. He greeted Jordan as the new majority owner and chairwoman of the board. He then instructed Ethan to follow whatever directions Ms. Reed gave him without argument, confirming that the transfer of ownership had been completed earlier that afternoon and that Ms. Reed was currently conducting an unannounced, incognito review of customer service standards across all newly acquired locations.
The silence that followed was heavy and absolute. Ethan’s hands began to tremble as he stared at the screen, then at the documents on the counter, and finally at the woman in the faded jeans standing before him. The arrogance that had defined his posture only moments ago completely dissolved. He stammered, attempting to offer an immediate apology, claiming that it was all a terrible misunderstanding and that he was simply trying to protect the security and privacy of the hotel’s high-profile guests.
Jordan did not accept the excuse. She explained that true hospitality was not about judging a person’s worth by their clothes or making assumptions based on appearances. It was about treating every individual who walked through the door with dignity and respect. She pointed out that within less than ten minutes, he had insulted a guest, destroyed personal property, encouraged his staff to mock a customer, and threatened law enforcement action without ever verifying the information in front of him.
