Ethan’s heart leaped with excitement. This was his chance. If he could impress the Chairman himself on the night of his Vice President announcement, his rise within the corporate hierarchy would be absolute. He quickly adjusted his cuffs, smoothed his tie, and stepped forward with his arm extended, a broad, welcoming smile spreading across his face.
“Mr. Vance!” Ethan called out warmly, taking three brisk steps toward the elderly patriarch. “What an absolute honor to have you here tonight. I’m Ethan Caldwell, and I want to personally thank you for—”
Arthur Vance didn’t even look at Ethan. He walked right past his outstretched hand, his boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood perimeter of the ballroom. His sharp, clear eyes were fixed entirely on the woman standing beside the janitorial cart.
The room held its breath as the grand Chairman of the board stopped directly in front of Grace. He adjusted his coat, set his cane against his side, and lowered his head into a deep, respectful bow.
“Good evening, Madam Chair,” Arthur said, his resonant voice carrying across the silent hall. “We were not expecting you to conduct your annual operational review in person tonight, let alone in uniform.”
The silence in the room became absolute. Ethan stood frozen mid-stride, his hand still suspended in thin air, his smirk vanishing into a look of total shock.
Grace offered Arthur a soft, polite smile and stepped out from behind the cart. “It’s quite all right, Arthur,” she said, her voice calm, clear, and commanding. “Sometimes the best way to evaluate an investment is to see how the people inside it treat those they believe have no power.”
She reached down, unpinned the simple white name tag from her navy shirt, and casually tossed it onto the cart. She then removed her outer work jacket, revealing a tailored, elegant dark blouse underneath that bore the crest of Vance Global Holdings—a crest reserved exclusively for the majority shareholder and ultimate head of the parent board.
