Gerald stopped crying instantly. His ears perked up. “It… it did?”
“Yes,” Barnaby said, picking up the cool stone and holding it out with both hands like a royal offering. “The metal shield was weak. It broke because it was tested. But this stone shield? It’s unbreakable.”
Gerald looked at the shining pebble, then looked up at Barnaby’s soft, forgiving eyes.
A massive, toothy grin spread across Gerald’s small face, completely replacing every trace of his previous sadness.
He snatched the pebble from Barnaby’s hand and held it high above his head with a victorious screech. 🌟
“The power has returned!” Gerald cheered, dancing in tiny circles around Barnaby’s legs.
Barnaby laughed, sitting back down in the warm straw and letting out a relaxed sigh of relief.
He closed his eyes, ready to finally get that peaceful mid-day nap he had been dreaming about all morning.
The sun felt warm on his dark fur, the breeze was gentle, and the sanctuary was finally quiet again.
Then, suddenly, he felt two small, leather-like hands wrap firmly around the sides of his head once more.
Barnaby opened one eye.
Gerald was leaning right over his face again, staring down at him with those same huge, wide, unblinking eyes.
“What are you doing now, Gerald?” Barnaby groaned, his voice full of playful exhaustion.
“The unbreakable shield requires an oath of loyalty!” Gerald announced proudly, squeezing Barnaby’s cheeks back into that hilarious, wide-open grimace. “Hold still while I inspect your ears for dragon dust!”
Barnaby couldn’t help but laugh out loud, his wide, open-mouthed grin catching the sunlight as his little brother went right back to work.
Sometimes, family drives us completely crazy, poking our eyes and squishing our faces when we just want to rest.
But in the end, their wild love and endless imagination make the chaotic journey worth every single moment. ❤️
