Mama Bertha sat back on her massive haunches, watching her son’s ecstatic celebration with a gentle, loving smile.

She nudged Kito playfully with her snout, sending him tumbling onto his back in a heap of soft black fur.

Kito giggled wildly, rolling over and scrambling back onto his feet in an instant.

He ran back to the mirror, pressed both hands against the smooth frame, and blew a big, dramatic kiss to his own reflection.

He had learned two incredible lessons on this unforgettable summer afternoon.

First, the world was full of wondrous surprises if you were brave enough to look closely.

And second, he was pretty darn awesome just the way he was.

A loud rustle suddenly echoed from the tall bushes behind the playground climbing tower.

Out popped little Milo, Kito’s mischievous younger cousin, holding a giant, half-eaten yellow mango in his hand. 🥭

Milo took one look at Kito standing proudly in front of the glossy green panel.

He trotted over curiously, his eyes locked onto the glowing reflection in the polished glass.

Milo gasped, dropping his mango right into the dirt.

He stepped up beside Kito and stared into the mirror, seeing two baby gorillas side by side for the very first time.

Milo slowly raised his arm and puckered his lips toward the glass, preparing to kiss his own brand new reflection.

Kito looked at his mother, then looked at Milo, and let out a soft, knowing laugh.

He wrapped his arm around his little cousin’s shoulders, ready to guide him through the magic of self-discovery.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures in life do not require travelling across oceans or climbing tall mountains.

Sometimes, all it takes is a clean mirror, a open heart, and a little bit of love for the person looking back at you. ✨
