People were bent over the handrails, crying with laughter.
Some tourists were holding their stomachs, gasping for air as they recorded the magnificent scene on their phones.
“He’s holding your keys hostage!” someone shouted from the back.
“That gorilla is a total legend!” another person cheered.
Barnaby sat motionless, continuing his calm rebellion against human impatience.
He was the master of the sanctuary, and he was currently holding the entire afternoon hostage with unmatched poise.
Moments later, the sanctuary’s head wildlife keeper, Sarah, came rushing down the wooden pathway.
She had heard the roar of laughter and the frantic screams from the viewing deck.
She pushed through the crowd and saw Gary pale, sweating, and pressing his hands against the fence.
She looked into the green enclosure and saw Barnaby sitting against his favorite log, holding a keyring, with his signature finger resting against his face.
Sarah couldn’t help but let out a quick laugh herself before turning to Gary with a serious look.
“Sir, did you drop your personal items into the enclosure while trying to offer him food?” Sarah asked calmly.
“It was an accident! I swear!” Gary stammered, pointing frantically. “Can you tell him to give them back?”
Sarah smiled gently and shook her head.
“Barnaby doesn’t take orders from anyone, sir. But he does understand the art of a fair trade.”
Sarah reached into her utility pouch and pulled out Barnaby’s absolute favorite treat in the world.
A perfectly ripe, bright yellow organic banana and a crisp red apple.
She walked over to the side feeding hatch, opened the small iron door, and gently tossed the fresh fruit into the enclosure.
Barnaby smelled the sweet aroma of the fresh banana instantly.
He slowly lowered his hand from his cheek, ending his legendary gesture.
