Nicolás sat in a simple wooden chair beside her bed, far away from the leather armchairs of his penthouse office. On the small bedside table rested the worn, faded folder that the paramedics had brought in with Cecilia’s personal belongings. Nicolás had finally opened it while she was in post-operation recovery.
Page by page, the truth had laid itself bare before him. The bank receipts, the forged photographic logs, the transfer agreements bearing his mother’s private signature—it was all there, exactly as Cecilia had tried to tell him on that freezing night nine months ago. He had thrown her out into the storm to protect an illusion, choosing to believe the mother who viewed him as a asset rather than the wife who had tried to save him.
The heavy door opened softly, and a nurse walked in carrying a small bundle wrapped in a pale pink blanket. She offered the newborn to Nicolás with a gentle smile. With hesitant, uncertain hands, the famed surgeon took his daughter into his arms for the first time. The baby squirmed slightly before settling against his chest, her tiny fingers curling around his thumb.
A heavy lump formed in Nicolás’s throat. Tears, unfamiliar and hot, blurred his vision as he looked down at the child he had almost denied. He pressed a quiet kiss to her forehead, feeling the soft warmth of her skin.
A faint sound from the bed made him freeze. Cecilia’s eyes were slowly fluttering open, squinting against the soft morning light filtering through the blinds. She moved her head slightly, her gaze drifting until it landed on Nicolás holding the baby.
Silence stretched between them, heavy with the weight of nine months of pain, regret, and unspoken words. Nicolás did not try to offer excuses. He did not mention his reputation, his status, or his pride. He simply leaned forward, resting his forehead against the side of her mattress, holding their daughter close so Cecilia could see her.
When he finally raised his head, his eyes were wet, and the cold demeanor that had defined Dr. Nicolás Herrera was completely gone. He reached out with a trembling hand, gently placing his fingers over hers on the bed, waiting to see if she would push him away or let him help rebuild everything he had broken.
